Alexander Glazunov
1865–1936
Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov was a Russian late-Romantic composer who bridged the nationalist Mighty Handful tradition and a more cosmopolitan, technically polished European style. A prodigy from a wealthy Saint Petersburg family, he was mentored by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and became a central figure in the Belyayev circle. He served as director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 1905 to 1928, mentoring the young Shostakovich, before emigrating to Paris in 1928, where he died in 1936.
